The first-ever cases of the MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) virus in South Korea have been confirmed. A couple in their 60s travelling from Bahrain tested positive for the virus, which has a 40 per cent fatality rate, and were admitted to a quarantine ward. Their conditions were reported as improving. A third person, who had initially shared a hospital room with the man, was also infected. The man visited three hospitals before he was diagnosed, and staff and patients are being checked for symptoms. No other cases were reported, including passengers on the couple’s flight so far.
