Hundreds of historic Newari buildings damaged in the recent earthquakes in Nepal now face a new threat. The Nepali government has started the process of tearing down damaged buildings that might pose a risk to public safety, but there is no system of compensation or consultation with home owners, leaving many facing homelessness. Some owners of traditional houses are considering selling the carved timbers from their houses to provide money to construct new concrete homes. The implications for Nepal’s architectural heritage are severe, and local conservationists fear that more buildings may be demolished by the authorities than were damaged in the earthquakes.
