Record-breaking Picasso sells for $179.4m in New York

A new art world record was set in New York on Monday night when a 1955 painting by Pablo Picasso went under the hammer for $179.4 million. It’s the highest amount ever paid for a single art work sold at auction and was well over the $140 million that auctioneers Christie’s had estimated for the piece. The painting in question was Picasso’s ‘Les Femmes d’Alger’. Thirty minutes after the sale, a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti sold for $126 million. Read more: artsbeat.com
