Fiji debates new service levy on food bills

Debate is running hot in Fiji with the proposed introduction of a service fee for visitors to be added to bills which already attracts a VAT and a service turnover tax. The proposal would see the fee supplement the income of tourism industry workers. However hoteliers and restaurant owners say they’re already operating on very tight margins and any additional levy will make Fiji a less attractive destination. The $200 departure tax keeps airfares high for travellers from key markets such as Australia, New Zealand and the US market so opponents argue. A standard service fee will further drive up the cost of travel and reduce visitor numbers.
