Shop owners forced out of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar

Several shop owners in Istanbul’s historic Grand Bazaar have been forcibly evicted after they refused to leave their shops in protest over plans to renovate the area. Police blew up a historic door in the Bedesten section of the Bazaar to remove the renters, who had barricaded themselves inside. The shop owners had been served with an eviction order by the local government and claim they were not consulted on the renovation plans, which they believe will make the area too expensive for them to remain. When they refused to leave by the specified date, police raided the Bazaar to remove them. Read more: hurriyetdailynews.com
