Warsaw mayor likens Smolensk monument to Nazi-era rallies

A proposed monument in Warsaw to commemorate the 96 people who died in the 2010 Smolensk plane crash has been likened to light displays at Nazi-era rallies in Nuremberg. For this reason, Warsaw’s mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz Waltz is opposing the light installation in front of the city’s presidential palace. If approved, it would be the first monument to remember the victims of the disaster, who were en route to the 70th anniversary ceremonies to remember those who died in the Katyn Massacre.
