The government of Bangladesh has introduced compulsory swimming lessons in schools in an attempt to reduce the number of drowning deaths in the water-logged nation every year. According to figures from the United Nations, nearly 18,000 people drown every year in Bangladesh, compared to around 400 per year in the UK, and drowning is the largest single cause of death for children in the country. The problem is most severe in urban areas, where children rarely learn to swim, but face regular flooding during the monsoon season. Read more: bbc.co.uk
