Transport strike hits Indian state of Telangana

The newly-created Indian state of Telangana – formerly part of Andhra Pradesh  – has been hit by a widespread transport strike over a new tax on road users. From 2 April, tourist buses, taxis and goods vehicles from outside Telangana will be forced to pay a new tax to enter the state, adding up to 50% to the price of bus tickets. Dozens of bus companies from Andhra Pradesh have gone on strike to protest the move, bringing bus services to Hyderabad and other cities in Telangana to a standstill.
