Alicante tells women to dress conservatively for Easter parades

Lipstick, short skirts and tight-fitting clothing is off the agenda for women taking part in this year’s Semana Santa (Holy Week) Easter parades in Alicante after the organising association issued written fashion guidelines for participants. About 1500 women join the parade each year as damas de mantilla (mantilla women), donning the traditional lace shawl over their head and shoulders and dressing in black. The conservative dress guidelines have been issued to remind women to dress in keeping with the parade’s traditions: skirts should not be above the knee, make-up should be au naturale, fishnet tights are out and hair should be worn to a certain height, among other rules.
