After criticism from environmentalists, Costa Rican officials have temporarily blocked permits allowing the export of Hammerhead shark fins while they establish new criteria to ensure potential future exports will not further endanger the sharks. The process is expected to take six months and will include a report assessing whether commercial exploitation of the marine animals can continue responsibly. Although the practice of shark finning is illegal in Costa Rica, the government has previously authorised shark fin exports derived from sharks that are bycatch from the fishing industry.
