Athens suburb to be home to new state-of-the-art cultural centre

Athens will have a new state-of-the-art cultural centre in late 2016, when the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre opens in Faliro Bay, 4.5km south of the city centre. The cultural centre will comprise the Greek National Opera (with a 1400-seat auditorium), the National Library of Greece (with a book capacity of two million, a green roof and a glass-walled reading room) and the 170,000-sq-m Stavros Niarchos Park (with a lawn for outdoors performances, a playground, cycling and running tracks). The construction costs are covered by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which will donate the centre to the state, and the library and opera will then be funded by taxpayers.
