Waters rise as Carnival kicks off in Venice

Venice’s streets were doubly inundated this weekend, with both acqua alta floodwaters and elaborately costumed Carnival-goers making an appearance. Saturday marked the start of the annual Carnival celebrations with a floating parade of costumed characters passing along the city’s canals, whilst on what should have been dry land, masked revellers and tourists donned rubber boots and plastic galoshes to wade through the higher-than-usual floodwaters.
