Samples of bottled drinking water in the Indian city of Mumbai have tested positive for a series of toxins, including bromates which have been linked to cancer. More than a quarter of samples tested had levels higher than permitted levels of toxins, based on World Health Organisation standards. Pollution with bromates can be a by-product of some disinfection processes, and other samples were found to contain high levels of heavy metals from Mumbai’s polluted water table. However, as India has no legal limits on levels of bromates, the water bottling companies are permitted to keep using the same processes to remove viruses and bacteria.
