Cancun goes an hour ahead in line with USA ET

The Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home of Cancun and other popular tourist resorts, is re-setting its clocks on the first of February. The state has decided to put itself one hour ahead, aligning it with Caribbean destinations such as Cuba and the Bahamas, along with Eastern Time in the US, in the hope that this will better suit the large number of visitors coming from that area. Critics complain that West Coast US travellers, already hit with a two-hour time difference, will be further put off by the extra hour, and visitors to popular Yucatan sites like the city of Mérida, just west of Quintana Roo in a different, will be deterred from touring the peninsula.
