Mass taxi strike in China over car-sharing services

Taxi drivers in numerous cities and provinces across China are participating in an ongoing mass strike against ride-sharing services like Uber. Several small strikes broke out in late 2014 over the matter, but striking escalated on Friday with drivers participating in several in major cities, including Nanjing, Jinan and Chengdu. In some cases, up to 80% of the cities’ total taxi drivers have gone on strike, prompting the municipal governments of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou – China’s three major cities – to investigate whether or not ride-sharing services are authorised to operate under local laws.
