Communist nostalgia reigns at new Red Guard-themed restaurant

The Red Guards – militant bearers of Mao’s Little Red Book that helped usher in China’s violent Cultural Revolution in the 1960s – are the subject of a new theme restaurant in Gansu province. The recently-opened ‘Red Classic’ restaurant is staffed by servers wearing Red Guard costumes who address patrons using nostalgic phrases from the era, such as ‘Welcome to the countryside! All you need is to improve your meal’. The restaurant’s owner said he came up with the idea after seeing the popularity of ‘Red tourism’ in other parts of China. Read more: shanghaiist.com
