Hackers steal air miles to book trips and upgrades

Thieves have hacked thousands of air miles accounts at two major US airlines, using the accounts to book free trips and upgrades. American Airlines and United both say the thieves did not hack the airlines’ actual systems, but instead gained password and username information elsewhere, and then used the information to log into the accounts. American Airlines began notifying compromised account holders on Monday, freezing some accounts and offering to set up new ones for affected users. A United spokesperson said the company would reinstate all stolen miles. Read more: canada.com
