Protests bring traffic to standstill in Dhaka

At least ten vehicles were set alight by mobs today in Dhaka and other parts of the country as part of a hartal (shutdown) called by the student wing of the opposition, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, on Monday. The protests, called in response to the arrest and intimidation of opposition politicians, have brought transport to a standstill in many areas. Political demonstrations in Bangladesh are often accompanied by violent disturbances, ranging from incidents of arson to bomb attacks on trains and buses. Read more: thedailystar.net
