Spicejet cancels flights as fuel companies refuse to pump gas

Spicejet, the latest of India’s private airlines to fall on hard times, has cancelled almost all of its flights today after fuel companies refused to refuel its aircraft in a dispute over unpaid bills. The air industry in India was deregulated in 1986, leading to a proliferation of budget airlines offering cut-price domestic fares, but many operators spent fortunes expanding their fleets without making a profit, leading a series of high-profile bankruptcies.
