Controversial seal hunters' subsidies culled in Norway

The Norwegian government has voted to end the controversial subsidies offered to seal hunters in the country. While seal hunting has not been officially banned in Norway, the 12 million kroner payout to hunters – which accounts for approximately 80% of their income – will be removed from the 2015 budget, a move which is likely to send seal hunting into sharp decline. The EU introduced an embargo on seal products in 2010 in response to strong public opinion against the practice. Read more: thelocal.no
