Oldest structure on National Mall to be restored

The 178-year-old Lockkeeper’s House is the oldest existing structure on Washington DC’s National Mall, but it has been boarded up in a state of disrepair for over 40 years. Now, with the help of a $1 million grant from American Express, the building will be restored and used as an education space.The structure was built between 1835 and 1873 when DC used canals to transport goods and was the home of the lock keeper who collected tolls from barges.
