Azeri sports fans outraged by European Games mascots

Following the announcement of the mascots for the 2015 European Games, to be held in Baku in June, sports fans in Azerbaijan have taken to internet forums to register their displeasure. According to organisers, the mascots, a gazelle and a pomegranate-headed boy, represent ‘natural beauty, grace and purity’ and ‘playfulness’ respectively, but online critics have described them as ‘shameful’ and ‘disgusting’, with some noting that the pomegranate is a symbol of one of the Games’ sponsors.
