Phuket ‘umbrella police’ clash with tourists

At least three tourist couples were left fuming after having their personal umbrellas seized by local council officials at Surin Beach in Phuket, despite being within their rights to use them. The unlawful confiscation reportedly occurred because the tourists were mistaken for having rented their umbrellas from beach vendors, a practice now banned on Phuket beaches. Local reports indicate that some vendors have begun renting smaller umbrellas on Phuket beaches in an effort to avoid detection for flouting the new law. Read more: phuletwan.com
