Low-level marijuana possession no cause for arrest in New York City

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton announced on Monday that the New York City police will stop arresting most people found carrying small amounts of marijuana. Smoking in public will still be cause for arrest. The aim of the policy is to free up police manpower and to improve relations between the police and ethnic minorities in New York who last year made up the majority of arrests for possession of marijuana.
