Cubans go mad for South Korean soap operas

The latest craze in Cuba? South Korean soap culture. Cultural differences are said to be spurring the unlikely success of a number of shows, which started with Queen of Housewives last year. The drama was aired on Cuba’s state-run TV station and watched by 70% of the viewing population. Observers have put Cubans’ fascination down to the leisurely pace of the dramas and stationery acting of the Korean actors, which stands in sharp contrast to the constant histrionics of overacted Latin American telenovelas from countries such as Brazil that have dominated the market previously.
