Nepali farmers fund snow leopard conservation

As part of an innovative new scheme in Nepal, hill farmers are being encouraged to pay a fee for snow leopard conservation, despite attacks on their livestock by snow leopards. The funds from hill farmers are pooled into a central account which is used to compensate farmers who lose livestock and fund programmes for snow leopard conservation. It is hoped that the cash incentive for farmers, who used to receive nothing if their livestock were killed by snow leopards, will encourage people to take an active role in preserving this severely endangered species.
