Hiker pushes stroller and survives bear bite to complete 900-mile Santa Fe Trail

Photographer and historic trail hiker Bart Smith has finished a 900-mile hike on the Santa Fe Trail from Franklin, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Travelling about 20 miles a day, Smith managed to finish the hike in two months by pushing his gear and food in a baby jogging stroller. Among the things he learned during the trip was to always pitch a tent – one night while Smith was sleeping under the stars, a bear bit him on the rear. Smith yelled and rolled over, startling the bear, which ran off into the woods. On Saturday Smith will move on to his next hike: walking El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro from Ohkay Owingey to El Paso. Read more: santafenewmexican.com
