Slumbering Serengeti lions win top photography prize

Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols, a photographer who tracked a pride of big cats for six months in the Serengeti, has won the coveted 2014 Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY) Award with a stunning black-and-white image of a lion pride sleeping atop an outcrop beneath a dramatic African sky. One of the judges told BBC News that his image spoke of the animals’ behaviour and their relationship with their environment, as well the photography techniques of today – the image’s great sense of depth was enhanced by the use of infrared.
