First snow of the winter falls on Japan's Mt Fuji

A snowcap has been observed on Mt Fuji in Japan for the first time this autumn, three days earlier than it appeared last year. Snowsports enthusiasts may hope it signals the beginning of a bumper ski season, but in August Japan’s Meteorological Agency downgraded the chance of an El Nino weather pattern (linked to high rain/snowfalls) occurring to 50%. Niseko United, Japan’s largest ski resort, opens for the winter on 1 December. Read more: japantoday.com
