Thai officials clamp down on elephant attractions

Officials on Phuket are reportedly investigating an elephant camp in central Phuket for alleged animal trafficking. The Director of Livestock Phuket, Weerasit Puthipairoj, said at a meeting in Phuket Provincial Hall on Tuesday that greater enforcement is needed to protect the island from becoming a place where elephants can be smuggled in easily. Elephant rides and shows remain a popular tourist attraction on Phuket, despite claims by animal welfare experts that such practices are inhumane. Read more: phuketwan.com
