Edinburgh Castle has had a record-breaking summer with 763,566 visitors between June and September. The figures confirm its status as Scotland’s top paid-for tourist attraction. Other historic Scottish sights also welcomed more visitors than ever – Scara Brae in Orkney recorded a rise of 11%, and overall figures were up 4%. Scotland hosted sporting events including the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup in 2014, and promoted a Year of Homecoming. Read more: bbc.co.uk
