A stampede at the revered Baidyanath Dham temple in Deoghar in the Indian state of Jharkhand has killed 11 pilgrims and injured dozens more.

The crush occurred when the temple gates were opened to a large crowd of pilgrims who had been waiting through the night to enter the temple. Despite attempts to introduce modern crowd control techniques, stampedes occur regularly at religious festivals in India, and experts advise travellers to take extra caution when attending festivals and other events attended by large groups of people.
