Introduction

The 'capital' of the northern West Coast is Westport. The town's fortunes have waxed and waned on coal mining, but in the current climate it sits quietly stoked up on various industries, including dairy and, increasingly, tourism. It boasts respectable hospitality and visitor services, and makes a good base for exploring the fascinating coast north to Denniston, Charming Creek, Karamea and the Heaphy Track.
