The island's beautiful coastal walks (ranging from one to three hours) include the 3km Cross Island Walkway (from Onetangi to Rocky Bay). Other tracks traverse Whakanewha Regional Park, a haven for rare coastal birds and geckos, and the Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society’s three reserves: Onetangi (Waiheke Rd), Te Haahi-Goodwin (Orapiu Rd) and Atawhai Whenua (Ocean View Rd).
Te Ara Hura is a 100km network of connected trails taking in coastline, forests, vineyard stops and historic places. Route markers indicate the way ahead on the island, and more information and detailed maps are available online at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz. Search for 'Waiheke Island Walkways'.
