Getting There & Away

From Wellington, Metlink commuter trains run to Masterton (six times daily on weekdays, twice daily on weekends), calling at seven Wairarapa stations including Featherston and Carterton (though notably not Greytown or Martinborough).

Tranzit Coachlines runs the InterCity service between Masterton and Palmerston North ($21, two hours) five days a week (no Monday or Saturday buses, but two on Fridays).

Getting Around

Metlink bus 200, operated by Tranzit Coachlines, heads from Masterton to Cartertown, Greytown and Featherston seven times on weekdays and three times on Saturdays. All of the Saturday buses continue on to Martinborough, but only one of the weekday services does. On weekdays a further five buses connect Martinborough to the train station at Featherston.

Beyond the main towns, you'll need your own vehicle; many of this area's notable sights are out on the coast and along rural roads. As is often the case, getting there is half the fun: the drive up over the ranges from Wellington is particularly scenic.
