Welcome to Selwyn District
The highly scenic Great Alpine Hwy pierces the heart of the district on its journey between Christchurch and the West Coast. On the Canterbury Plains, it passes through the small settlement of Springfield, notable for a monument to local Rewi Alley (1897–1987), who became a great hero of the Chinese Communist Party.
Selwyn's numerous ski fields may not be the country's most glamorous, but they provide plenty of thrills for ski bunnies. Porters is the main commercial field; club fields include Mt Olympus, Cheeseman, Broken River, Craigieburn Valley and Temple Basin.
