Rotorua in

One Day

Start with a stroll through steamy Kuirau Park then head down to Ohinemutu to check out the carvings on the wharenui (meeting houses) and St Faith's Anglican Church. Follow the lakefront to Government Gardens then cut through the park for a better look at the exterior of the Rotorua Museum and Blue Baths. Grab a bite to eat in the town centre, then head to either Whakarewarewa or Te Puia for a cultural show and to gawk at the dependable Pōhutu geyser. In the evening, hit the Eat Streat section of Tutanekai St for a meal and a drink. Relax before bedtime with a lakeside mineral soak at the Polynesian Spa.

Two Days

Too much geothermal excitement is barely enough! Spend the morning in Waimangu Volcanic Valley and/or Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. In the afternoon, drive down to Lake Tarawera, stopping for a circuit of Tikitapu (the Blue Lake) on the way. In the evening, catch a concert and consume a hāngi (earth-cooked meal) at Tamaki Māori Village or Mitai Māori Village.
