In Reefton town, nostalgia permeates every period building and forlorn mining hut. Reefton's gold-mining hey-day is never far from mind, with museums dedicated to the gold rush and a ghost town, 23km south, dating to this lost era. Early adoption of the electricity grid and street lighting gave Reefton its tag line 'the town of light', but these days it's the great outdoors that shines brightest. Reefton is a good base for mountain biking, tramping and rafting, if the good ol' days aren't enough of an enticer to swing by.
