The stately, steam-powered TSS Earnslaw was built in the same year as the Titanic (but with infinitely better results). Climb aboard for the standard 1½-hour Lake Wakatipu tour (adult/child $65/22), or take a 3½-hour excursion to the high-country Walter Peak Farm for $80/22 where there are sheepdog and shearing demonstrations.

There's also the option of a trip that includes a BBQ lunch (adult/child including TSS Earnslaw $105/45) or dinner ($130/65) at the farm's Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant.

The ship was once the lake’s major means of transport, though now its ever-present cloud of black soot (it burns a tonne of coal an hour) seems a little incongruous in such a pristine setting.
