Welcome to Papatowai & Around
Nature shows off some of her best angles at Papatowai, which is perched at a meeting of forest, sea and the Tahakopa River. The leafy village has barely 40 inhabitants but swells with holidaymakers in summer, drawn by a languid vibe and glittering views of waterfalls and golden bays. Adding to the low-key delight, tracks to beauty spots are easy peasy: Matai or McLean Falls are reached by an easy tramp, and walkers of all levels can idle around lustrous Lake Wilkie.
A couple of days in Papatowai satisfies most visitors. You'll soon find yourself drawn east to gorgeous Purakaunui Falls (along the road to Owaka) and the jagged coast of Kaka Point, or west to the wild surf of Curio Bay.
