Feel like stretching your pins? The Opunake Walkway is a signposted 7km, three-hour ramble around the Opunake waterfront, starting (or finishing) at Opunake Lake on Layard St.

Look for Te Namu Pa, the site of the famous battle of Te Namu Pa where Wiremu Kingi Matakatea fought off 800 Waikato Māori over a month with a single rifle. You can reach it via Opunake Cemetery and over the Otahi Stream.
