Welcome to National Park Village
More than 100,000 people complete the 19.4km, mixed-terrain walk each year, which is as invigorating as it is challenging. Eerie rock formations and steaming craters look more like something from Mars than New Zealand soil, but the ultimate photo stop is the Emerald Lakes. Depending on the weather, you’ll see people sitting in portable chairs enjoying the view or scrambling down the other side to escape bone-chilling winds.
National Park Village is busiest during the ski season, but in summer it makes a quieter base than Taupo for active travellers making the most of nearby outdoor activities. A lesser-known fact about the area is that it's a hot spot for train enthusiasts. Who knew?
