The Milford Hwy's shield-your-eyes beauty is best explored by car, stopping at lookouts and walks when you please. Allow at least 2½ hours to drive the full length of the highway from Te Anau to Milford Sound, but there are enough tramps, lakes and heart-stopping overlooks to take a full day.
Check when you book bus tickets whether the operator is purely A-to-B or incorporates scenic lookouts.
