It's all about the lake, which is smaller and deeper than the parallel Lake Wanaka, and with mountains that give it an almost darker beauty. Even by New Zealand's high scenic standards, the 23km drive along its western shore on the SH6 is ridiculously beautiful. At its end it climbs to the Neck, an isthmus-like strand of land just 1.5km wide that separates the two lakes.
