Welcome to Lake Brunner
Expect your pulse to slow almost as soon as you arrive at Lake Brunner. Named for England-born explorer Thomas Brunner, this 40 sq km expanse of sapphire water lies 35km southeast of Greymouth. The lake is large but main settlement Moana (on its northern shore) is minuscule; nonetheless it brims with accommodation options to suit the families and trout-fishing enthusiasts drawn to this sedate spot.
Brunner is a scenic place to idle away a day or two strolling lakeside tracks, fishing or bird-watching. Book ahead in summer (and note that it's whisper-quiet in winter).
