Hokitika is a great base for walking and cycling. Download DOC's brochure Walks in the Hokitika Area, and visit Hokitika Cycles & Sports World for bike rental and advice on tracks, including the West Coast Wilderness Trail.

Hokitika and its surrounds have some of the West Coast's most charming accommodation, and there's plenty of it for all budget levels.

Travellers wearied by endless plates of West Coast blue cod and lamb shank will find Hokitika's food scene an excellent palate cleanser. Pub classics and fish and chips are easy to find, but so are vegetarian and vegan meals, superb espresso and exceptional desserts.

Drinking & Nightlife

Nightclubs are out, but Hokitika boasts a handful of options for an evening drink and a bit of banter with the locals. Our fave is the 'secret garden' behind West Coast Wine Bar.

Hokitika has a buzzing arts and crafts scene centred on carving and polishing pounamu into ornaments and jewellery. Be aware that some galleries sell jade imported from Europe and Asia, so ask before you buy.

Along for the ride are woodworkers, textile weavers and glass-blowers, all represented at classy boutiques in the centre of town.
