Looping through a pair of lush valleys, with a crossing over a subalpine pass, these two tracks combine for a moderate four- or five-day tramp. There are basic DOC-run huts along the way; backcountry hut passes must be purchased in advance.
The tracks link with the Routeburn Track via a short connecting track at Lake McKellar – you can either follow the Routeburn's tail end down to the Divide, or (if you’ve prebooked) take the track back towards the Glenorchy side of the mountains. From McKellar Hut, it's about an hour's tramp to Lake Howden Hut on the Routeburn Track, which is another hour from the Divide.
Access to the Greenstone and Caples Tracks is from a car park at the end of Greenstone Station Rd.
