Te Anau and Invercargill have the biggest range of options: fun hostels, quality motels and campgrounds, through to luxurious eco-retreats. There's a good range in Oban (on Stewart Island/Rakiura) and Manapouri, too, to meet the demand of nature-spotting, cruise-boarding visitors. Elsewhere, accommodation is spread out: don't expect townships with a concentration of hotels, but self-catering motels sprinkled across a large area. Yes, you should book (or at least call) ahead.
