Two scenic heritage train journeys set off from Dunedin’s railway station. The best is the Taieri Gorge Railway, with narrow tunnels, deep gorges, winding tracks, rugged canyons and viaduct crossings. The four-hour return trip aboard 1920s heritage coaches travels to Pukerangi (adult one way/return $72/115, child $19/29), 58km away, leaving at 9.30am and 3pm daily.

On Sundays Taieri Gorge trains carry on for another 20km from Pukerangi to Middlemarch (adult/child one way from Dunedin $81/21) – the start of the Otago Central Rail Trail.

The Seasider heads north along the coast as far as Waitati (adult/child return $70/25, two hours) once or twice daily, depending on the season. Aim for a seat on the right-hand side of the train for better sea views.
