Mt Difficulty

Bistro in Cromwell

As well as making the region's most prestigious pinot noir, Mt Difficulty is a lovely spot for a leisurely lunch looking down over the valley. There are large, wine-friendly platters to share, but save room for the decadent desserts. Book ahead.

The winery dates back to the early 1990s, when five growers collaborated to produce wine from the promising but unproven Central Otago region. Not only does it offer the chance to taste various wines at its welcoming cellar door, its spectacular perch overlooking the Cromwell Basin encourages a very long lunch. Sharp and modern, with scrumptious fare and alfresco dining on the terrace, it pays to book a table and sort out well in advance who’s responsible for driving onward.
